Q. – How do I sign up for fields?
A. – A list of field coordinators will be supplied at the draft. Each team is allowed to reserve a field for practice, with a maximum of two days per week. If you are hoping to practice more that two days in a week, and a field is not available, there are plenty of open grass areas that can be used for your practice.
Q. – What are the expectations of the coach?
A. – Coaches are expected to:
- Teach their players how to play and enjoy the game of soccer.
- Allow all of the players a chance to play different positions.
- Make it fun for the players during practice. (This does not mean allowing the players to do as they wish, but give them fun challenges.)
- Keep the players active during practice. Scrimmaging should only last about 1/3 of each practice.
When league games start, remember that they are for the kids, not for the coach or the parents. You may have the opportunity to keep the game fun for your team and the opponent. Please always keep that in mind. Wins and losses, and how much you win by, does not dictate a successful year.
A. - There are many factors taken into consideration: Coaching license, input from other coaches, parent input, referee input, player input, and coaching longevity. The RPSL board wants to make sure that all of our players are learning the game of soccer and having fun. The Coaches Representative submits the list of available coaches to the board, and then the RPSL board decides and approves the coaches for all age groups and Divisions.
A. – Notification will be made by email whether or not you are selected as a coach.
A. – Each coach will draw a number, to determine the order of the draft. A “snake” draft (team number one pick’s first in the first round, and then last in the next round) will be used. There will be two lists: An older age list and the younger age list. All players from the older age list will be taken first. When that list is depleted, then the draft will continue with the younger age group. Each coach must select their own child in the second round of the given age list. If their assistant’s child is in the same age group, then that player will be their third pick. However, if the assistant’s child is in a different age group (younger or older) then that player will be selected as the second pick from that age group. Each coach is allowed only “one assistant coach” for the draft.
If you are ahead by more than 4 points at half time, then it’s time for some game plan changes:
- Move your forwards and impact midfielders to the back positions or out of the game.
- Change your formation from an offensive to a defensive formation (more backs, less forwards).
- Don't allow any break-aways, and make all shot attempts from crossing passes only.
- Require a certain number of passes before a shot on goal can be taken.
- No shots from inside the penalty area, or from headers only.
If you score a fifth goal, or still ahead by four goals midway through the last half, then take your best scoring player out of the game or place them in the goal.
If the player or parents have a problem with these suggestions, let them know there is nothing accomplished by running up the score, and you'd like to give the other players a chance to play different positions. If there is a problem confronting certain parents with this philosophy, please inform the Coordinators and they will explain the philosophy.
If coaches deliberately run the score of their games up too high, they can be disciplined by the League, which could include denial of future coaching opportunities.
The Rohnert Park Soccer League has a zero-tolerance policy regarding the harassment of it's Referees.
NO YELLING AT REFEREES, OR QUESTIONING THEIR CALLS, WILL BE TOLERATED AT ANY TIME.
Do not yell at the Referee's. The League will send representatives to observe the specific activity of coaches, assistant coaches and parents when needed.
Harassment of a Referee may result in the termination - and forfeiture - of the game being played, suspension, and other administrative discipline. Harassing coaches will not be permitted to coach in future seasons.
In extreme cases, the police will be called, and restraining orders sought.
